How to Use This Site
This site is a collaborative website. That means anyone can use it to work with others. You can share your thoughts as well as interesting and useful links. For example, you can help others to write a description of a challenge. Or write down a challenge of your own. You can also list more data sources or software tools. Besides, you can correct errors and inaccuracies in what others have written. Most pages under Resources tab are open to such public editing. On this page, we list simple steps that allow you to edit content on this site and discuss ideas with others. If you have any questions please email us at teresabouza@datafest.net
Below are instructions on how to join the discussion, edit and create pages (including one for your project).
We'll be using our Google group as the main platform for brainstorming and discussion. You can join the group here. The membership also grants you the page editing privileges described in sections below. (However, we'll also be using the usual social media services that are listed here.
Most of the pages on this site that are under Resources tab are open to public editing. The process is very simple:
- Join our Google group (here). The membership grants you the editing privileges.
- Click the "Sign In" link. It's at the bottom of every page.
- Navigate to the page you wish to edit.
- Click on the Edit button:
- The page will open in the edit view. Start typing and when you are done - click the Save button:
That's it!
Creating pages on this site
(NOTE: For instructions on how to create a page for your project, please see sections below)
As a member of our Google Group, you can also create pages. Let's say, you would like to contribute a new challenge and you wish to put the details on a separate, new page. Just follow these simple steps:
- Join our Google group (here). The membership grants you the editing privileges.
- Click the "Sign In" link. It's at the bottom of every page.
- Navigate to the page to which you wish add a new page (in our example - the Challenges page).
- Click on New Page icon:
- Choose a name for your page
- Select Web Page template:
- Select “Put page under Challenges”:
- Click the create button:
- Write down your ideas on your new page and click the Save button:
- Don’t forget to go back to the Challenges page and insert a link to your new page so that others can find it.
You are done!
To present your work, please follow these simple steps:
- Join our Google Group & sign in
The membership will allow you to write on this website which you will need for the next step. You can join the group here. Once you've joined the group, click on the "Sign In" link (it's at the bottom of every page).
- Create a page for your project on this website.
- Navigate to the Project List page.
- Click on the New Page icon which looks like this:

- Name your page. You can just name it after your project.
- Choose "Project Page" template:
- Choose 'Put under "Projects List":
- Click on the "Create" button which looks like this:

- List your project on the Project List page.
You are done! Now you just need to meet the deadlines for filling your project page with information that judges can use to evaluate your your work.
For local organizers: how to create a page for your location
To make a page for your local hackathon, please follow these simple steps:
- Sign in
Click the "Sign In" link. It's at the bottom of every page.
- Navigate to the Locations page and:
- Click on the New Page icon which looks like this:

- Name your page: City Country.
- Choose "Location Page Template":
- Choose 'Put under "Locations":
- Click on the "Create" button which looks like this:

- Replace the placeholder image of Washington, DC, with an image of your location. Please use a sufficiently large image which has the same aspect ratio as that of the placeholder image. (The aspect ratio is the proportion of width to height.) The template image size is 3,150px × 1,372px (scaled to 968px × 422px). An image of 1,000px × 425px
also works.
- Replace the embedded Google map with a Google map of your location.
- Replace the placeholder text with the information about your local event.
- Click the Save button.
- Navigate back to the Locations page and:
- Replace the placeholder text in Venue and Dates sections.
- In the blue box, the MORE INFO SOON text is linked to a placeholder page. Click on the text to see the link and the option to change or remove. Change the link to the link to your page.
- Replace MORE INFO SOON with VIEW DETAILS.
- Click the Save button.
- Create an identical page on our Spanish-language site [link]
You are done!
